User Interface Layout

Layout Definitions

  • Ribbon
    The ribbon displays when you create or open a file. It provides all the tools necessary to create a project or family.

  • Application Menu
    The application menu provides access to common file actions, such as New, Open, and Save. It also allows you to manage files using more advanced tools, such as Export and Publish.

  • Quick Access Toolbar
    The Quick Access toolbar contains a set of default tools. You can customize this toolbar to display the tools that you use most often.

  • Tooltips
    Tooltips provide information about a tool in the user interface or an item in the drawing area, or instructions on what to do next when using a tool.  Hover your cusor over a panel tool and you will see a dialog box appear with tips on how to use the tools.  You can also press F1 while hovering over the tool to get a more descriptive explanation on how to use the tool.

  • Keytips
    Keytips provide a way to access the application menu, the Quick Access toolbar, and the ribbon using the keyboard.                                                    Press ALT button to access Key Tips and ALT Button again or ESC to close.

  • Project Browser
    The Project Browser shows a logical hierarchy for all views, schedules, sheets, groups, and other parts of the current project. As you expand and collapse each branch, lower-level items display.

  • Drawing Area
    The drawing area displays views (and sheets and schedules) of the current project. Each time you open a view in a project, the view displays in the drawing area on top of other open views.

  • Status Bar
    The status bar provides tips or hints on what to do. When you highlight an element or component, the status bar displays the name of the family and type.

  • Options Bar
    The Options Bar is located below the ribbon. It displays conditional tools dependent on the current tool or selected element.

  • Properties Palette
    The Properties palette is a modeless dialog where you can view and modify the parameters that define the properties of elements.

  • View Control Bar
    The View Control Bar provides quick access to functions that affect the current view.

  • Search
    Enter keywords in the Search field to quickly find the content you need in a long list of options.

  • Dockable Windows
    Dockable windows can be moved and resized, and either floated or docked to a location.

  • Recent Files
    Recent Files lists the models and families that you opened most recently. Click a recent model or family to open it, or use one of the buttons to perform another action.

  • InfoCenter
    InfoCenter consists of a set of tools on the right side of the title bar that enable you to access many product-related information sources.

What is the Project Browser?

To open the Project Browser, click View tabWindows panelUser Interface drop-downProject Browser, or right-click anywhere in the application window and click BrowsersProject Browser.

Application Menu 

The application menu provides access to common file actions, such as New, Open, and Save. It also allows you to manage files using more advanced tools, such as Export and Publish.

 

Quick Access Tool Bar

The Quick Access toolbar contains a set of default tools. You can customize this toolbar to display the tools that you use most often.

 

 

 

 

To move the Quick Access toolbar

The Quick Access toolbar can display above or below the ribbon. To change the setting, on the Quick Access toolbar, click Customize Quick Access Toolbar drop-downShow Below the Ribbon.

 

To add tools to the Quick Access toolbar

Navigate the ribbon to display the tool that you want to add. Right-click the tool, and click Add to Quick Access Toolbar.

Note: Some tools on contextual tabs cannot be added to the Quick Access toolbar.

If you removed default tools from the Quick Access toolbar, you can add them again by clicking the Customize Quick Access Toolbar drop-down, and selecting the tool to add. See Figure 1 below

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To customize the Quick Access toolbar

To make a quick change to the Quick Access toolbar, right-click a tool on the Quick Access toolbar and select one of the following options:

  • Remove from Quick Access Toolbar removes the tool.

  • Add Separator adds a separator line to the right of the tool.

  • See Figure 2 and Figure 3 below

The Options Bar is located below the ribbon. It displays conditional tools dependent on the current tool or selected element.  The options bar has a distinct green color when in use.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To move the Options Bar to the bottom of the Revit window (above the status bar), right-click the Options Bar, and click Dock at bottom.

Ribbon-Tabs-Panels

Revit Ribbon- Located across the top of the UI, the ribbon is a sting of work panels located side by side one another. Above you will see the Architecture ribbon is displayed with the Select, Build, Circulation, Model, Room and Area, Openning, Datum and Work Plane panels on it.

The Ribbon will change when you select a new work tab.

 

Revit Work Tabs- Work Tabs are located above the Ribbon and contain specific-grouped work panels.

 

Revit Panels- Work panels are grouped Revit commands that create or modify features in a Revit document. Multiple panels are located on the ribbon under specific work tabs.

Changing the way the ribbon is displayed on the UI to maximize the drawing space or to maximize the options displayed on the ribbon can be achieved by clicking the ribbon custimization button.  See image to the left. There you will have multiple options to change the ribbon display.
